Pinterest in the Classroom

I have been a Pinterest Addict for as long as I can remember. All of the creative ideas people have can all be saved in one place, even when I do not even try them out. Pinterest is a place for people to share so many things relating to so many topics. I created a “My Classroom” board a couple of months ago before I even knew this would be an assignment in my Educational Technology course. Daydreaming about what my classroom will look like and things I could teach my students is so exciting for me. From this Pinterest activity I learned that there are a ton of resources out there to prepare and give you ideas for a classroom. Not only what it looks like, but activities for students to learn with and crafts they can do and technologies they can use. It’s like an overload of fun!

As a teacher I think I will utilize Pinterest a lot. I use it almost everyday anyway and people are constantly posting things and new ideas. If there is a holiday coming up and I want a special activity I can just look it up on Pinterest and have a new lesson plan in seconds!

Pinterest makes it easy to find ideas using many key words. If you do not know what you are looking for just one keyword can lead you in the right direction. There are hundreds of ideas that pop up in seconds with tons of ideas for everything you are doing. It also makes it easy for you to organize the ideas you like into specific boards and not just on one page. That way when you are searching for something you have saved you can narrow down the area where it might be hiding.

With this comes challenges though because some of the images do not come with links to their websites featuring more information like “how-tos” or printouts of the activities. Also, trying to get to a website or blog requires you to click on the picture then click on the picture again just to get it to come up. Finally, a lot of things pinned are just to the homepage of the website and not the actual post, so it may take a while to dig if people do not post the specific page in Pinterest.

Overall I think Pinterest is a fantastic tool. It’s not like Facebook or twitter where you are updating people, but a place for people to share visuals and links to ideas. You learn a person’s style or what foods they like or as a teacher what classroom activities they are looking for. I would recommend this sight to anyone. It is an incredible tool.
